Ian McCormack

Ian’s practice includes Executive and Leadership Coaching, Strategy and Facilitation, Problem Solving and Government Affairs. A Registered Professional Forester and Certified Executive Coach, he offers over thirty-six years of operational and strategic business leadership experience, as well as government and partnership development capabilities. Two decades of work in the forestry industry saw Ian performing roles ranging from logging camp foreman to woodlands manager, as well as corporate assignments. Following his career in Forestry, Ian became a co-owner and senior leader of a global engineering firm focused on the development and execution of business strategies in the Forest Products, Oil & Gas/Industrial and Mining and Minerals sectors. He believes in and lives ‘servant leadership’ and is committed to showing up and supporting the development and success of those around him. Ian is keenly interested in who people are, how they think and what they bring to work. As a thinking partner, he can bring clarity of purpose and aligned results to their business and professional lives.  Ian has experienced considerable success in a variety of arenas, as well as a few spectacular failures along the way, all of which he brings to what he considers the ‘purposeful work’ of Compass Leadership.

Ian’s focus of practice is working with senior executives, operational and community leaders to support their success in meeting the demanding challenges of today’s work environments. He is impassioned about working with individuals and teams to maximize their effectiveness as leaders; ensuring alignment with organizational strategies and objectives and assisting in developing their pathways through critical decisions and opportunities. As a former senior executive, Ian understands the complex issues facing today’s leaders. He provides strategic advisement on a range of business and organizational issues and opportunities, including; strategy, problem solving, partnership facilitation, business performance, and Government Affairs.

Ian, a Registered Professional Forester (ON), holds an Honours Bachelor of Science Degree in Forestry (HBscF) from Lakehead University, as well as a Graduate Certificate in Executive Coaching from Royal Roads University. He is an experienced and successful volunteer and leader in the not-for-profit sector, having served on numerous Boards for over twenty years at the community, provincial and national level. He is a former Chair of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce and Thunder Bay International Airports Authority, and a former Director of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and Wasaya Airways.  Ian recently served on the Board of Governors of Lakehead University and the Search Committee for the next CEO and Dean of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine.
